Of particular interest are: Asaline Hearne, an illiterate freedwoman who immediately after the Civil War managed to test the limits to achieving racial justice in Robertson County; & Matthew Gaines, an ex-slave of Christopher Columbus "Lum" Hearne, who after slavery, served as Senator in the 12th Texas Legislature.
